Transition Energy Mindset: How to Successfully Shift from Work to Home

A big part of achieving your goals, believe it or not, is gonna be separating your work from your personal life.- Jake Maxey, Episode 26

Intentionally shift your mindset between work mode and home focus

Have you found yourself thinking about that last thing you didn’t get done at work while at the dinner table with your family? Have you had a rough morning stuck in traffic which caused your work day to start out on the wrong foot? These are both symptoms of the inability to transition your mindset from home to work and back again. It will lower your effectiveness at work. It will allow work to follow you home and prevent yourself from being fully present with your family or friends. Let’s cover how an Impactful Engineer shifts their transition energy mindset to achieve their goals at work and home.

Take intentional action on these to master the transition between home and work: 👇

  1. Set your nonnegotiables: What must you accomplish to be successful at home? Is it dinner with the family? Is it a bedtime routine with the kids? Is it a nightly work session in the garage with your best friend? Communicate whatever it is to who needs to know at work that no matter what, you must be there, and follow through every day. The work can wait!
  2. Take a walk outside: Did you have a tough morning before work? Was work tough and heading home to your spouse? Before transitioning between home and work life, take a walk outside and breathe deep. This will reset your mindset, and not bring unwanted emotional baggage.
  3. Turn off notifications: Removing notifications (sounds and visuals) from your devices will prevent distractions and keep you present. This goes for social media applications at work and emails from work at home. Be present where you are!
  4. Set routines: The more routines you deploy in both work and home, the more energy you will have for the dynamic events throughout your day, because your brain will not have to ramp up to get through the routine items. This will also allow your focus and presence to be more acute to where it needs to be at any given moment.

These four directives are just the beginning to mastering your ability to transition between work and home effectively. Listen to The Impactful Engineer Podcast, Episode 26: “Transition Energy & Mindset”, to dive into more thorough detail on these and more!
